Qailulah (a siesta), an old Chinese custom and its scientific benefits.

Did you know that it is a centuries old custom in China to take an afternoon nap? Nap time is very sacred to Chinese people. They take an afternoon nap from around 12:30 to 1400.

Did you know that most Chinese schools have a half-hour nap programmed straight after lunch break? It is because they believe that sleep can actually restore the ability to learn!

You will be shocked to know, “According to the advocates, a short nap in the middle of a working day can increase productivity by over 30 percent and alertness by 100 percent as well as improve memory and concentration. They also claim that it can reduce stress and the risk of heart disease by 34 percent.”

According to a research quoted by The New York Times, “young adults who slept for 90 minutes after lunch raised their learning power, their memory apparently primed to absorb new facts.”

Let me mention a few important figures who regularly napped and recommended it to others. They are, Napoleon, Margaret Thatcher, Churchill and Bill Clinton. But the most famous of all is our beloved Prophet Muhammad saw!

It is from the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad saw to do qailulah, a siesta, in the afternoon.

We should be keen to take a nap or siesta during the day, whether before zuhr or after. Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Take a nap, for the shayaateen do not take naps.” (Reported by al-Tabaraani. Al-Saheehah, 2647).

Ishaaq ibn ‘Abd-Allaah said: “Taking a nap is one of the deeds of good people. It revitalizes the heart and helps one to pray qiyaam al-layl.”

Al-Hasan al-Basri passed by a group of people in the marketplace in the middle of the day, and heard the racket they were making. He said, “Do these people take a nap?” It was said to him, “No.” He said, “I think their nights must be bad.”

Amazing, isn’t it? Now, after 1500 years, Science is telling us the wisdom behind this sunnah of Prophet Muhammad saw!

Remember me and my family in your du’as.
